High and dry

Write On Wednesdays Exercise 22 Select a piece of music that reflects the mood of writing you'd like to aim for. Press play. Start free writing. Write the first words that come into your head. When the music's over, so is the writing.

Whoa, 4 minutes isn't very long! I love pretty well everything Radiohead, but this one is just beautiful.
PS  Friday - I posted on Wednesday, but felt the piece incomplete, so have added to it today!

High and Dry

Away from it all, away from the city, an unplanned flight from the mundane. I cling to his back as we speed up the motorway, cares floating behind as lightly as the wind takes them. My heart strains against the curve of his back as the road winds ahead.
A chance meeting, a night to remember and then this leap. He asked me to fly with him, fly away and I have. Brief thoughts of responsibility, of the risk I’m taking are merely snatched from me as what I know slides behind.
A flashback to the surprise on mother’s face, a hint of sadness or was it fear?
Am I mad going with my impulse and trusting him? Echoes of news reports shudder through my brain, images of missing persons, of tearful families, of taped bushland scenes.
A sucker for a bad boy, Jack was right up my alley - bearded , brash and free of spirit. I brush away a loose hair from my lips and recall his mouth on mine, sure and intent.
No, this felt right. I’d thrown my question to the skies just 3 weeks ago, and he was my answer. Yes, this was right. I take a breath and snuggle in tightly.

  1. Mysterious! I envisage 'flying' on a motorcycle. Perhaps that's what you are alluding to, or maybe just my interpretation based on my own pillion riding experience! Nice work.

  2. I want more! More, I tell you!

Great stuff, Kate. I cannot help wondering where they're going, what will become of them -- hence my exclamation above, haha. I take it you've felt the awfully attractive impulse to leave it all behind and just run far away at times. What would that feel like? As exhilarating and carefree as you described here?

    Wonderful use of words, too.

  3. Beautiful and mysterious, I want to know what will become of them too! I love the line, "a hint of sadness, or was it fear?". Lovely.

  4. Thanks for for your comments , I've put the music back on and added to it today .
Yeah, have certainly felt the pull to escape from time to time, not like this though (but i may have had some bad boy moments MANY years ago! :)

  5. Oh, now that the possibility of tragedy --all those news reports and stories-- has been brought up I do fear a little for the narrator! I'd really like to know where this is going, in case you want to keep working on it. There's a myriad possible ways the story can go from here, and I'm curious about where you'd take it. =)

It would also be great to know more about Kate's bad-boy moments, if you know what I mean. ;)

  6. Mmmm, I know that feeling of wanting to throw caution to the wind and fly!

    Maybe I will ...

    I love this :)

  7. I love this too. LOVE the song choice, I think Radiohead are one of those bands that inspire creativity. And they did with you.

Great description - bearded, brash and free of spirit. Clever use of internal thoughts. They made the piece more dangerous and something we can all relate to, the tug of freedom versus the pull of responsibility. Love it!
